Install SheetAI in Excel
SheetAI isn't in Microsoft's add-in store yet, so you add it with this small file (sheetai-manifest.xml). It only tells Excel where SheetAI lives; it contains no code.
Pick where you use Excel
Excel on the web
Quickest. Works with any Microsoft account, personal or work.
- 1Download the file with the button at the top of this page. It saves as sheetai-manifest.xml.
- 2Open a workbook at excel.cloud.microsoft (or office.com).
- 3On the Home tab, click Add-ins (the four-squares icon at the right end of the ribbon), then More Add-ins at the bottom of the panel.
- 4Click Manage My Add-ins, then Upload My Add-in.
- 5Choose sheetai-manifest.xml and click Upload. SheetAI opens and appears under Add-ins.
Excel on the web keeps an uploaded add-in in that browser. On another browser or computer, upload it again.
Excel for Windows
Microsoft 365 or Excel 2016 and later. Takes about 5 minutes, once.
- 1Make a folder such as
C:\SheetAIand put the downloaded sheetai-manifest.xml in it. (Desktop Excel has no upload button, so Excel reads the file from a shared folder instead.) - 2Right-click the folder → Properties → Sharing → Share…, share it with yourself, and copy the network path it shows (it looks like
\\YOUR-PC\SheetAI). - 3In Excel: File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Trusted Add-in Catalogs. Paste the path into Catalog Url, click Add catalog, tick Show in Menu, then OK and restart Excel.
- 4Open a workbook, then Home → Add-ins → Advanced. Pick Shared Folder at the top of the dialog, select SheetAI and click Add.
On a work or school account, it's simpler to ask your Microsoft 365 admin to deploy it for you: it then shows up in desktop Excel with no setup.
Excel for Mac
Microsoft 365 or Excel 2016 and later.
- 1Quit Excel.
- 2In Finder press Cmd+Shift+G (or choose Go → Go to Folder…) and open
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Excel/Data/Documents/wef. If theweffolder doesn't exist, create it. - 3Copy the downloaded sheetai-manifest.xml into that folder.
- 4Open Excel and a workbook, then Home → Add-ins and choose SheetAI.
Deploy to your whole organization
With a work or school tenant, an admin can push SheetAI to everyone (or chosen groups) in one step. It then appears on the Home tab in Excel on the web, Windows and Mac without anyone installing anything.
- 1Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and go to Settings → Integrated apps.
- 2Click Upload custom apps and choose Office Add-in as the app type.
- 3Pick Provide link to manifest file and paste
https://sheetai.co/excel/manifest.xml, then Validate. Linking the URL rather than uploading the file means your users get manifest updates without you re-deploying. - 4Choose who gets it (everyone, specific users or groups), accept the permissions and deploy.
You need to be a Microsoft 365 admin to do this. Microsoft says a new deployment can take up to 24 hours to reach every user. Each person then signs in to their own SheetAI account from the pane.
Sign in once
- 1Click Open SheetAI on the Home tab, or pick SheetAI from the Add-ins panel. The pane opens on the right.
- 2Click Sign in. Your browser opens sheetai.co; sign in if asked and click Connect.
- 3Go back to Excel. The pane picks up the sign-in by itself within a few seconds.

Or just type a formula
12 AI formulas work in any cell, like =SUM() does. Type one, press Enter, and fill it down a column. Put text in quotes, or point at a cell such as A1. In Excel every SheetAI formula starts with SHEETAI.
=SHEETAI.AI_ASK("prompt")General-purpose AI: ask anything, get the answer in the cell=SHEETAI.AI_SUMMARIZE(A1)Summarize long content in 1-2 sentences=SHEETAI.AI_TRANSLATE(A1, "Spanish")Translate to any language=SHEETAI.AI_CLASSIFY(A1, "yes, no")Classify into one of the categories you give=SHEETAI.AI_EXTRACT(A1, "email address")Extract emails, names, dates and other details from text=SHEETAI.AI_FORMAT(A1, "title case")Reformat text: title case, phone numbers and so on=SHEETAI.AI_SENTIMENT(A1)Sentiment score from -1 to 1=SHEETAI.AI_TAG(A1, "urgent, spam")Apply the tags that fit, from your list=SHEETAI.AI_FILL(A1:C20)Fill the blanks in a range from the pattern around them=SHEETAI.AI_LIST("US states")Generate a list, one item per row=SHEETAI.AI_FORMULA("sum of column B")Describe what you need and get the Excel formula=SHEETAI.EXPLAIN_FORMULA("=SUM(A:A)")Explain what a formula does in plain EnglishSign in from the SheetAI pane first: formulas use that sign-in and your credits. The pane's Settings has a formula builder that writes the quotes for you. Formulas need Excel on the web, or Excel for Windows or Mac with Microsoft 365 (or Excel 2021 and later); on iPad and older versions of Excel the chat pane still works, without formulas. Installed SheetAI before formulas existed? Download the file again and add it once more.
Common problems
- I clicked Sign in but the pane still says it's waiting
- Make sure you clicked Connect in the browser tab that opened. If you closed it, click Open again in the pane. The link works for 10 minutes; after that, click Sign in again.
- The pane is blank or shows an error
- Close the pane and open SheetAI again. If it's still blank, reload the page (web) or restart Excel.
- A SheetAI formula shows #NAME?
- Text has to be in quotes:
=SHEETAI.AI_ASK("hi"), not=SHEETAI.AI_ASK(hi). If it is, your copy of the add-in is older than the formulas: download the file from this page again and add it once more, then re-enter the formula. - A SheetAI formula shows #NOT_SIGNED_IN
- Open the SheetAI pane and sign in, then re-enter the formula. Formulas use the pane's sign-in.
- SheetAI disappeared from Excel on the web
- Uploaded add-ins are stored in your browser, so clearing browser data removes them. Upload the file again.
- Excel asks me to sign in again
- Sign-in lasts 7 days. Click Sign in, then Connect, and you're back.
- How do I remove it?
- Web: Add-ins → More Add-ins → Manage My Add-ins, then remove SheetAI. Mac: delete the file from the
weffolder. Windows: remove the folder under Trusted Add-in Catalogs.
