SheetAI vs ChatGPT for spreadsheets
You almost certainly already pay for a general assistant, and it can analyse a file you upload to it. The catch is everything either side of that: exporting the file, uploading it, copying the answer back, and doing it all again next month. SheetAI lives in the spreadsheet - functions you fill down a column, an agent that edits the grid, and a Google Sheets add-on for the files your team already shares.
Every figure about ChatGPT on this page comes from their own pages, last read on 5 September 2026. Sources are listed at the bottom.

The short version
This is not really a like-for-like fight, and pretending otherwise would insult your judgement: a general assistant is more useful across your whole working day than any spreadsheet tool will be. But for spreadsheet work specifically it is the wrong shape. Nothing it produces is connected to your file, so every task becomes export, upload, ask, copy back - and the copy back is where mistakes are made. SheetAI is worth its $20 a month precisely because it removes that loop: the AI is in the cells, the agent edits the sheet, and the result is a workbook you can share and re-run next month. Keep the general assistant for everything else; use this where the numbers live.
What each one actually is
Most of the decision comes down to this, and a feature table can hide it.
A spreadsheet application with an AI agent inside it, plus an Excel add-in with the same chat in a task pane, and a Google Sheets add-on that puts twelve functions and a chat sidebar into sheets you already have. Ask for a summary block, a chart or a variance column and it is written into the grid as formulas. Twenty templates ship as finished workbooks, files import and export as .xlsx and .csv, and every AI edit can be reviewed and undone.
A general-purpose assistant with file uploads and data analysis. Paste in a table or upload a spreadsheet and it will summarise, chart and reason about it, write formulas for you to copy, and explain what a broken one is doing. Plans run from a free tier with tight limits through roughly $20 a month for the mainstream paid tier, a per-seat business plan, and a much more expensive top tier. It has no connection to your spreadsheet: what happens in the chat stays in the chat.
Head to head
Shaded cell is the one we think wins that row, including the rows where it isn’t us.
| SheetAI | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Connected to your spreadsheet | Yes - it reads the grid and writes to it, in the app or in Google Sheets | No. You upload a copy and copy results back by hand |
| AI you can put in a cell | Twelve functions filled down like formulas: AI_CLASSIFY, AI_EXTRACT, AI_TRANSLATE, AI_SUMMARIZE, AI_SENTIMENT and more | None. It can write a formula for you to paste |
| Repetitive column work | One function, filled down two thousand rows, recalculating with the data | Paste a chunk, get an answer, paste it back, repeat |
| Next month's version | Paste new data into the sheet you already built; formulas recalculate | Start the conversation again |
| Auditability | Formulas live in the cells, so anyone can see how a number was produced | A pasted value with the reasoning in a separate chat |
| Ready-made templates | 20 built-in workbooks with formulas, formats and conditional rules already wired | It can describe one; you build it |
| Works inside Google Sheets | Yes - add-on included on every plan | No |
| Price | $20 a month for 1,000 credits, free tier to start | Free tier, roughly $20 a month for the mainstream paid tier |
| Everything that isn't a spreadsheet | Nothing. It is a spreadsheet tool | Writing, coding, research, images, conversation - the whole working day |
| Open-ended reasoning about a dataset | Good within the sheet | Excellent, and not constrained by a grid |
| You probably already pay for it | A separate subscription | Likely already in your life |

Their plan line-up changes often and their pricing page blocks automated reading, so the figures above are indicative and drawn from published summaries - check their site for today's list. The point is not the price anyway: at similar money you are choosing between an assistant that talks about your spreadsheet and one that works in it. Most people end up paying for both, and that is a reasonable answer.
Choose ChatGPT if…
Writing, research, code, and yes, the occasional look at a spreadsheet. We do one thing. If you only want one subscription in your life, it should probably be the general one.
A single file, a single question, nothing to hand over afterwards. Upload it, ask, move on. Installing anything would be a waste of your time.
Long documents, unusual data, open-ended thinking about what a dataset even is. A general assistant is not constrained by a grid, and sometimes the grid is the constraint you want to escape.
Choose SheetAI if…
Export, upload, ask, copy back, check you pasted into the right column. That loop is where errors get in, and it is the entire reason this product exists. Here the AI is inside the sheet: it reads the range and writes the result.
=AI_CLASSIFY written once and dragged down two thousand rows. A chat window cannot do that at all - it can only hand you text to paste.
A colleague opening your sheet can click a cell and see the formula. They cannot click a pasted number and see the conversation that produced it.
A spreadsheet is a machine you build once. Paste in the new month and it recalculates - no re-explaining the task to anyone.
The add-on is included on every plan, so the assistant turns up in the files people already share rather than in a separate window they upload copies to.
Twenty templates - budget, invoice, CRM pipeline, timesheet, KPI dashboard, attendance register - arrive with formulas and formats already in place. Ask a general assistant for a budget tracker and you get instructions; here you get the workbook.
Moving across from ChatGPT
Nothing to migrate, and nothing to cancel - keep the general assistant. This is about moving the spreadsheet part of your work into a spreadsheet.
- 1Sign in to SheetAI with any email address; ten credits, no card.
- 2Take the last spreadsheet task you did through a chat window and import the same file here.
- 3Ask the agent for the same thing you asked before, and watch it land in cells rather than in a message.
- 4For the column work you were pasting in chunks, write one function and fill it down instead.
- 5Add SheetAI to Excel or Google Sheets so the same assistant works in the files your team already shares.
Keep using the general assistant for everything that is not a spreadsheet - it is better at that than we will ever be, and this comparison is not an argument for cancelling it.

More comparisons
The same honest format, against the other tools people weigh up.
A capable add-on for very large batch jobs - but it is only an add-on. You still need a spreadsheet, and it isn't one.
A cheap, tidy =AI function for Sheets and Excel. Good at filling columns; it is not a spreadsheet and it does not pretend to be.
Already inside Sheets if your company pays for Workspace. Helpful at the edges, but there is no formula to drag down a column.
The obvious choice if your company is all-in on Microsoft and will pay for it. It is a licence on top of a licence, and it stops at Excel.
A polished spreadsheet built around live data connectors. Strong if your numbers come from APIs; it does not reach into Google Sheets, and AI tasks are metered tightly on the cheap plans.
A heavyweight AI spreadsheet with Python, SQL and huge file support. Priced per seat at $29, and it only works inside Sourcetable.
Upload a file, ask questions, get charts and answers back. Good at analysis; you do not get a spreadsheet you can keep working in.
